SOUND
Lesson Ideas and Activities
Sounds are just vibrations. The vibrating sound waves move through the air (or water) until they get to our ears. The sound and shape of these sound waves determine what kind of sound you hear.
As well as hearing sound, we can feel it too
Have you ever felt the floor shake from lots of people walking past at once? Or felt a speaker vibrating when it played loud music?
Hold your hand on your throat and hum a little tune. Do you feel your voice box vibrating? Try talking, singing, and using different volumes. Does that change how the vibrations feel?
Click here to experiment with this. All you need is a balloon.
Did you know that we can also see sound?
What is sound?
Pitch
The pitch of a sound is how high or low it sounds. The higher the pitch the higher and squeakier the sound. The lower the pitch, the deeper the sound. The sound of a child squealing or a whistle being blown, would be high pitch. The sound of a cow mooing or thunder clapping, would be low pitch.
